Yeah it's tough. This site has the same problem Dashing did, where its name doesn't communicate what it is and people get confused. It's not SEO friendly either.

If this is only going to be a place for former Dashing people to chill then you probably don't need to bother reaching out for new people. However, if you're going in that direction then I think Discord is more convenient for everyone. If you're set on growing this forum then you'll need to ask yourself what sort of site you want this to be and work towards that. It's your place now buddy, you don't need to follow the Dashing way of doing things.

Fwiw, post packages and exchanges helped Dashing when there were lulls in activity. Would recommend.

I could try post packages and exchanges, but I did that awhile back on my other place, but I didn't really get anything out of it.

RE: General Chat Thread - Queenie - 11-03-2017

Most people will treat the exchange as a job and won't become active afterward. That's ok though, because you mainly want their posts to give your already active members something to do.

I preferred topic exchanges because it encouraged new discussions rather than shitreplies in the chat threads.

RE: General Chat Thread - Grungie - 11-04-2017

It wasn't exactly the issue of people joining, it was the other members just not responding to the new threads.

RE: General Chat Thread - Queenie - 11-04-2017

Step 1: Make advertisements
Step 2: ???
Step 3: Active members

Getting actives is really hard. An active member is someone who pays you in their time to go to your website. That's a huge ask so you need to be compelling. Inviting friends is one way to do it and if you don't have friends that are interested then you can make some.

For instance, you can go to smaller forums, build relationships with the members / staff quick and easy, then link drop. Also, given most forums die, if you do this you can also get people to migrate over if that happens. I know that sounds super creepy but it grows your community and keeps their community going so what's the downside?

RE: General Chat Thread - Grungie - 11-04-2017

I've been doing all of that, but I've been having bad luck with finding forums that have people that really only care to hang out on that site, and when it dies it's "oh well", and they disappear off the internet. Also a lot of my old internet friends don't really hang out online anymore, and I haven't had much free time to hang out and find new friends like I used to.

There's also the issue I keep finding of forums where they don't seem to care about new members or threads, so they just ignore all the new people who join. It's not just me, but you can see a clear divide between all the posts and threads by all the new people, and all the regs just pretending they don't exist.

RE: General Chat Thread - Queenie - 11-06-2017

Yeah forums are on the way out so it's hard to find small, niche ones that people give a shit about. Maybe advertise on FB groups? Blogs? Discords?

RE: General Chat Thread - Grungie - 11-06-2017

Tbh it's been happening for several years, so it's more like people I talked to were getting older and then got caught up with college and/or work, sort of like what's happening with myself now.

I don't participate in FB groups or Discord, and idk how to advertise it on a blog without looking like a spammer in the comments.

RE: General Chat Thread - Queenie - 11-06-2017

I guess make a constructive comment to a blog post then drop the link? Idk I didn't do a whole lot of it when I advertised Dashing

I'm almost done with my second covers album. I'm tempted to wait another month or so till I go home, that way I can use an actual bass guitar in some songs.
