Something I've noticed over the years is that a lot of people refer to the original Sony Playstation as the "PSX". What I don't understand is how this came to be, since Sony released a machine actually named the "PSX". However, that was a DVR recorder with an integrated PS2 console that was released in Japan.

How did this come to be, and why don't people just refer to the original Playstation as the "PSOne"?
Before it launched, it was called the PlayStation X. Also the slim PlayStation was called the PS1 after the PS2 came out.

Going about naming things that way is worse than Razer's naming of peripherals that they've updated.

I see where the confusion comes in now, but you'd think they wouldn't give a hand me down name to a later product.
Idk, the actual PSX is goofy anyway, since it wasn't released by Sony Computer Entertainment, and doesn't specifically say Playstation anywhere.

I agree in that the concept in of itself is strange, putting a DVR and a console together?
Let's just put the Gameboy Micro a notch over this idea in "Actual bright ideas."

It may have been an old developer designation. Often, developers will be working on products before Marketing actually comes up with a name for products. So, the devs have their name for the product, in order to make it easier to specify. My own employer has done this every time there has been a major product release. So, before the original Playstation was released, it may have been called PSX.
A bit late to the party but:

'Sony's North American division, known as Sony Computer Entertainment America (SCEA), originally planned to market the new console under the alternative branding "PSX" following the negative feedback regarding "PlayStation" in focus group studies. Early advertising prior to the console's launch in North America referenced PSX, but the term was scrapped before launch.' ~ Wikipedia
